Hadley Transfer Station

The Profile

Hadley Transfer Station was a short-lived ensemble from Hadley, MA, dedicated to the songwriting of James Smola (King Radio). The group carved out a rootsy, stripped-down musical landscape that sat comfortably between the grit of Lou Reed, the narrative weight of Townes Van Zandt, and the blue-collar storytelling of Bruce Springsteen.

The History & Legacy

Following the unexpected passing of James Smola in 2024, Brave Tiger Records serves as a sanctuary for his recorded output. Much of this material was born from the collaborative learning process of recording together—a shared exploration of sound and song that began in local spots like The Baystate Hotel and culminated in a basement recording session beneath a dentist’s office.

The Recorded Artifacts

The band’s output is anchored by two primary documents. Their debut EP, A New World Around The Bend, established the band’s core alterna-twang sound.

Their subsequent full-length, East of the River, expanded the sonic palette with contributions from notable guests:

  • John Lebhar: Pedal Steel
  • David Gibson: Cello
  • Jim Armenti: Fiddle

Though the band dissolved shortly after the record’s completion, these recordings remain a vital tribute to James’s songwriting—a high-context preservation of a voice that remains equal parts Lyle Lovett and Bruce Springsteen.
